TL;DR: Farmers in India can earn roughly Rs 200 to Rs 900 a week from survey and reward apps, and the money is best in the gaps between sowing and harvest when there is genuine downtime. PollPe pays to UPI from Rs 50, works in Hindi and 9 regional languages, and does not need a laptop or a fixed schedule. Treat it as off-season pocket money, not a replacement for crop income.

Can farmers actually earn from apps in India?

Yes, and the reason is simpler than most people expect. Survey apps pay you for your opinion, and market research companies in India are desperate for rural and agricultural respondents. Almost every panel is stuffed with Bengaluru IT workers and Delhi office staff. A farmer from Nashik or Sitapur is a rare profile, and rare profiles get invited more often.

The realistic number is Rs 200 to Rs 900 per week, depending on how much time you actually have and how honestly you fill your profile. That is not life changing. It is a mobile recharge, a bag of urea, an extra week of school van fees. For most farming households, that is still worth twenty minutes a day.

What it is not: a scheme, an investment, or anything that asks you to pay first. If any app asks for a registration fee, close it.

Why the farming calendar is your biggest advantage

Nobody writing about earning apps understands this, so let me spell it out.

Farm work is not evenly spread across the year. It bunches. Kharif sowing hits in June and July with the monsoon, harvest around October. Rabi sowing runs October to December, harvest in March and April. Zaid is a short summer crop between March and June, and plenty of farmers skip it entirely.

Which means there are real windows where the field does not need you every hour:

  • Late July to September, after kharif sowing, when the crop is mostly growing on its own
  • January and February, after rabi sowing, before the harvest rush
  • April and May, post-rabi harvest, if you are not doing zaid
  • Any rainy day during monsoon when field work stops entirely

Those are your earning months. A survey app does not care that you disappear for three weeks during harvest and come back in November. There is no shift, no attendance, no boss. You open the app when you have twenty free minutes and you close it when the tractor needs you.

Compare that to a delivery gig or a shop job, which needs you every single day or not at all. That flexibility is the whole point.

What actually works for a farming household

AppPayoutMinimumHindi / regionalRealistic weekly
PollPeUPI, same dayRs 50Hindi + 9 languagesRs 150 to Rs 600
Google Opinion RewardsPlay Store creditNo minimumHindiRs 20 to Rs 100
AttaPollUPI / PayPalRs 250 approxEnglish onlyRs 40 to Rs 200
TolunaVouchersRs 500+English mostlyRs 50 to Rs 200

The regional language support is the thing that decides this for most rural users, not the per-survey rate. An app that pays Rs 80 per survey is worth nothing if the questions are in English and you screen out of every third one because a word was unclear. PollPe pays a bit less per survey than AttaPoll on paper but you finish far more of them, and Rs 50 minimum means you actually see money in week one instead of week five.

Google Opinion Rewards is worth keeping installed as a background app. It pays in Play Store credit, not cash, so it is not real money in the strict sense. But it takes ten seconds per survey and the credit covers app purchases and recharges through Play. Zero effort, small return.

What farmers get asked about

This surprises people. The surveys are not always about farming.

You will get:

  1. Agri-input studies. Seed brands, fertiliser preference, pesticide recall, tractor and implement brand awareness. These pay the best because the companies running them have real budgets. Rs 40 to Rs 120 is normal.
  2. FMCG and rural consumption. Which soap, tea, biscuit, cooking oil your household buys. Rural consumption data is genuinely scarce and brands pay for it.
  3. Financial services. Kisan credit card usage, crop insurance awareness, which bank you use, how you send money. Banks and insurers commission a lot of this.
  4. Mobile and telecom. Which network, how much data, why you switched. Endless supply of these.
  5. Government scheme awareness. PM-Kisan, soil health card, mandi price apps. Usually run by agencies working for policy groups.
  6. Plain consumer stuff. Movies, food delivery, cricket. You are also just an Indian consumer, and half your surveys will treat you as one.

Fill your profile honestly, including land holding, crops grown, and district. That is what routes agri surveys to you. If you leave it blank you become a generic user and the good invites go to somebody else.

Getting UPI sorted first

If you already use UPI, skip this. Plenty of farming households now do, and UPI crossed 23.66 billion transactions in July 2026 with most of the new growth coming from smaller towns and rural districts. But if a household member is new to it, this is the one setup step that matters.

You need a bank account with your mobile number linked to it, any UPI app (BHIM, PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm all work the same), and a UPI ID which usually looks like yourname@bank. Set the PIN using your debit card. That is the whole process, roughly ten minutes at the bank if the number is not linked yet.

One thing worth saying plainly: never share the UPI PIN with anyone, and no genuine app will ever ask you to send money to receive your earnings. Receiving money on UPI never requires a PIN. Anybody telling you otherwise is running a scam.

A realistic week during off-season

Say it is late January. Rabi is sown, harvest is six weeks away, and you have time in the afternoon and after dinner.

DayTime spentEarned
Monday25 minRs 65
Tuesday15 minRs 30
Wednesday30 minRs 110 (agri-input study)
Thursday10 minRs 15
Friday20 minRs 50
Saturday35 minRs 85
Sunday0Rs 0

Total: around Rs 355 for roughly two and a half hours across the week. Some weeks are better because a long agri study lands. Some weeks are flat and you make Rs 120. That is the honest range.

During peak sowing or harvest weeks, your earnings will be close to zero, because you will not open the app. That is fine. This is seasonal income by design.

The household multiplier

Here is where rural households have a genuine edge over urban single users, and almost nobody mentions it.

A farming household usually has three or four adults with different profiles. You, your spouse, a parent, maybe a son or daughter who has finished school. Each adult can have their own account on their own phone with their own bank details. Not fake accounts on one phone. Actual different people with actual different opinions, which is exactly what research panels want.

Four adults earning Rs 250 to Rs 400 a week each turns into Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,600 for the household. That number starts to matter.

What you should not do is run multiple accounts yourself on the same device. Every panel detects it, and you lose the balance along with the account. One person, one account, one phone.

Where this fits against other rural earning options

Survey appsLow but steadyFully flexibleZero
Dairy / livestockGoodDaily, fixedHigh
Off-season labourBetter per hourFull daysZero, but you must travel

Trading / betting appsUsually negativeAddictiveYour capital

Survey apps sit at the bottom of the earnings ladder and at the top of the flexibility ladder. That is the trade. Anyone telling you an app will replace a crop cycle or a dairy animal is lying to you.

And avoid the trading and colour-prediction apps completely. They are marketed hard in rural WhatsApp groups and they take money, they do not give it. We wrote about the difference in survey apps vs trading apps in India.

Practical tips that actually change your earnings

  • Set your app language first. Hindi or your regional language, before you take a single survey. Comprehension is the single biggest driver of completion rate.
  • Answer in the evening. Research panels launch batches during business hours and quotas fill by night. Between 6pm and 10pm you get decent supply without competing with the morning rush.
  • Do not rush the screening questions. Those first three or four questions decide whether you qualify. Straight-lining through them gets you flagged as a low-quality respondent and dries up your invites.
  • Keep the app notifications on. Agri studies have small quotas and fill within hours.
  • Withdraw at Rs 50 the first time. Seeing the money land in your account is what makes it real. After that you can let the balance build.
  • Charge the phone before you go to the field. Sounds obvious. It is the actual reason most rural users miss evening surveys.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a smartphone with high specs?

A: No. Any Android phone from the last five or six years handles survey apps fine. They are text and image based, not video heavy. A 2GB RAM budget phone is enough.

Q: How much data do surveys use?

A: Very little. A twenty-minute session is usually under 10MB, less than a couple of WhatsApp videos. Even a 1.5GB per day plan leaves plenty of room.

Q: Can I earn without a bank account?

A: For UPI cash you need a bank account, since UPI runs on top of the account. If you do not have one, a basic zero-balance Jan Dhan account works. Some apps also pay in vouchers, which does not need a bank account, but cash is more useful.

Q: Is this income taxable?

A: Technically survey earnings are income and go under income from other sources. At Rs 200 to Rs 900 a week most farming households stay well below the taxable threshold, and agricultural income has its own treatment. If your total income is anywhere near the limit, talk to a local CA. We covered the basics in our guide to tax on survey income in India.

Q: Will I get surveys if I only speak Hindi?

A: On PollPe yes, since the app and a large share of surveys run in Hindi and other Indian languages. On most international apps like Toluna and AttaPoll, you will struggle, because the survey content itself is English even when the interface is not.

Q: What happens during harvest when I stop using the app?

A: Nothing bad. Your balance stays, your profile stays, your account stays. Invite volume may dip slightly if you ignore invitations for weeks, but it recovers within a few days once you start answering again.

Q: Are these apps safe? What data do they collect?

A: Reputable panels collect demographic and opinion data, not your bank credentials. You give a UPI ID to receive money, which is a receive-only identifier. No genuine survey app needs your UPI PIN, OTP, or debit card number. If one asks, it is fake. More on this in our survey app data privacy guide.

The honest bottom line

Survey apps will not change a farming household's finances. They will add Rs 800 to Rs 3,500 a month across the off-season months, from time that was already idle, using a phone you already own, with no investment and no travel. Judge it on that basis and it is a good deal. Judge it against a crop cycle and it will disappoint you.

Start with one app, fill the profile properly, set the language, and withdraw once at Rs 50 so you know the pipe works. Everything after that is just repetition during the quiet months.
